V/S MTM Speakers – Part 1: The Boxes

The speaker being built here is Zaph’s Vifa/Seas MTM as described here. The floorstanding plans are being used. Chris was nice enough to help me build these speaker boxes. Without him I’d have to buy all kinds of tools, and it’s nice to have help when doing projects.

After researching a LOT, giving my dad (who the speakers are being made for) a couple choices on speaker, and getting some capital from him to pay for the parts, I ordered the drivers (Vifa Midwoofers and Seas Tweeters), capacitors, inductors, resistors, acoustical foam, and connector panels from Mediasound.

The Parts

The crossover for this speaker is a very simple one; you can see the schematic on the design page. I soldered the inductors to the caps, but won’t solder the rest til I have a piece of wood to mount them on

I went to Chris’ house for some woodworking action. We figured out all the cuts and went to work on the MDF. Clamps plus something long and straight is just as good as a table saw, right? Well, not near as fast.

Once all the cuts were made and sawdust blown off the pieces, it was time for gluing the pieces together. We used Titebond 2, which is a yellow wood glue, and let me say that I was very impressed with how well it held. For this portion, we used no screws and all my worries about the glue not being enough went away after we got the first one fully put together.

The following day (after putting the second box together) we sanded the edges of box one to make everything level and ready for future veneering.

So at the end of part one, we have this (box 1 glued and sanded, box 2 glued)
